 Introduction

Sunny preschool was opened in 2006. At this time it was a private preschool with no alternative funding other than a self-generated contribution from the parents.

In 2019 Sunny preschool was then converted to a „gGmbH“ and was re-opened as „Sunny preschool gGmbH“.

We are now financed by funding from KiBiz NRW in addition to a self-generated contribution from the parents.

Concept

1.1             Philosophy

The Sunny preschool gGmbH would like to prepare children optimally for the growing globalization, especially for Europe growing together as well as for a society that is getting older and more modern on the one hand.

1.2             Goal

The aim of Sunny preschool gGmbH is that the children who start school:

-  be fluent in German and proficient in Englishable to understand language

-   know the basics of the alphabet and can solve simple arithmetic problems

- consequently be prepared in the best possible way for school, so that they are particularly                            strong personalities, think and act independently and solve tasks and problems in a                                creative way in a society increasingly shaped by older people, to be tolerant                                     and respectful of these behaviors

1.3             Target Group

The preschool is offered for children from the age of two to school age.

1.4             Basic Life Concept

Every era, every century, every decade brings changes. People's needs are changing, while the demands on people are also changing.

If you want to be successful in this society, you have to adapt to these changes with new ways of thinking and alternative actions. With regard to children, this means offering your children the best possible conditions at an early age in order to create the basis for a successful life.

Against this background, the “Basic Life” concept was brought to life by Sunny preschool gGmbH. It is based on the components "bilingualism, rules, order, independence and self-confidence".

The world and Europe in particular are growing together faster and faster. In order for people to feel like they belong together, they have to be able to communicate. Communicating in the same language gives people the opportunity to express themselves and avoid misunderstandings. Ultimately, communication, both verbal and figurative, is key to a harmonious relationship.

In recent years, the English language has emerged as the key to this communication. Anyone who has the key to communication opens a door to cosmopolitanism and an understanding of other cultures.

There are rules all over the world. They are something positive, you can “hold on to” them. They represent something steadfast for humanity. In an environment with fixed rules, people feel more familiar. Rules are disadvantageous when they restrict people too much. Therefore, a democratic principle is: "As much freedom as possible, as little state as necessary." For everyday life at Sunny preschool gGmbH, this means in practice that the children are allowed to make almost all decisions on their own. However, the limit of freedom of choice finds its limits where other children or the general public are in turn restricted in their freedom. Right from the start, the children are made aware of both the rules and their personal freedoms. Care is taken to ensure that rules, consequences and freedoms do not change. We support the exercise of freedom at all times, while on the other hand non-compliance with the rules leads to child-friendly consequences.

The resulting order gives the children safety and security. In everyday life, it means that children and educators can concentrate better on tasks, while learning through play and are not distracted by the well-known " Finding their limits". The children can rely on the fact that, on the one hand, the rules once they have been learned and, on the other hand, that they are given freedom apply for the entire time in the facility and are therefore permanent.

With the knowledge of rules and the consequences of non-compliance as well as personal freedom, the children have it “in their own hands” to shape their everyday life. This makes them think and act independently. The children learn to avoid consequences and to use their freedoms positively. Within the framework of their freedom, the children make their own experiences. They have the opportunity to formulate questions themselves and to put their own ideas into practice. The children initially complete the tasks assigned to them on their own. Only when there are difficulties are the children first patiently supported by older children and later by the educators. Independent thinking and acting on the one hand and helping the smaller children on the other strengthens the children's self-confidence.

In summary, the educational and preschool concept "Basic Life" is a modern alternative to existing kindergarten concepts that takes into account the requirements of the 21st century. The concept offers parents the opportunity to create the basis for a successful life for their children.

The children, in turn, learn the basics for a life that they really need as people of this time:

- a language with which they can communicate worldwide.

- Rules and order for harmonious coexistence with other people.

- Self-reliance and self-confidence to face all the ups and downs of life.

1.5             Method

The method used in Sunny preschool for language teaching is called "Immersion". Immersion is a modern and very successful method in which the new language, which has yet to be learned, is used as the colloquial language of native speakers. As a result, after an adjustment phase, part of the care takes place in English, with one caregiver only speaking English and the other German. The children work out the meaning of what is said from the context, without having to learn any vocabulary or grammar.

1.6             Group Size

The number of children in the group is limited to 18 (subject to an exception by the city of Gelsenkirchen).

1.7             Opening Hours

The facility is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm

Drop off time is between 8:00 am and 9:00 am daily. All children should be present by 9:15 am. and have had breakfast. At 9:30 am our so-called "circle time" (welcome circle) takes place. At 11:30 am there is lunch. After lunch the children can play freely. In bad weather, movement exercises, experiments and projects are carried out. At the end there is a cozy "tea time" before the children are picked up. Pick up time is between 2:30 pm and 3:00 pm. The children can also be picked up at 1:00 pm. We mostly visit the park or playground in the afternoons.

Our Weekly Schedule:

-         Monday is our reading day, the children play freely from 10:00 am to 11:00 am

take part in various activities. At 1:00 pm. our “reading lesson” takes place. It involves reading stories through our "Reading Omi", playing together and singing songs.

-         Tuesday – our preschool day – after our “circle time” together, preschool games and exercises are carried out. All children from the age of four are supported according to their individual progress. On this day, additional experiments are carried out with the children.

-         Wednesday is our outdoor day. All activities are carried out outside. Even in "bad" weather. Alternatively, we offer yoga and indoor activities.

-         on Thursdays the procedure is the same as on Tuesdays, but with the focus on the English language

-         on Fridays, targeted creative activities are carried out with the children. The children's fine and gross motor skills are encouraged and strengthened. Language training is carried out in the morning.

1.8             Meals

The establishment offers a daily changing breakfast buffet. There is also a daily "tea time" at which tea and snacks are served. Tea time snacks are prepared together with the children. A warm meal together with a side salad and bread is served for Lunch.

1.9             Parent Work

A close cooperation between the facility and the parents is planned in particular through the obligatory active cooperation of the parents.

Parents' evenings (Kiga-related topics) take place twice a year, as well as parent talks twice a year (among other things, the child's developmental status, etc. are discussed).

1.10         Cross-Generational Work (currently not taking place due to Covid-19)

Nowadays, contact between children and their grandparents is becoming increasingly rare. Children often lack understanding and respect for the older generation.

Once a week, a volunteer will offer a reading lesson in German. In addition to the actual reading hours, our reading grandmother/grandfather also participates in the groupplay, sing along and take part in various activities. The stories read are discussed and worked through.
There is also an annual grandma-grandpa day at the facility, to which all grandparents are invited to the facility.

1.11         Neighborhood Work

The children go on several trips a year and get to know neighborhood and city facilities, e.g. zoo, fire brigade, police, library, beekeepers, market place, pharmacies, etc.

1.12     Staff

The staff consists of an English/German kindergarten manager,

several German and English speaking teachers,

Recognition year interns, as well as pupils and students.

1.13     Facility

Sunny preschool is located in a residential area in Gelsenkirchen on the street "Am Schifersberg 32". The street is a 30 km/h zone. It is located next to the „Lohmühlen Park“ which is a fairly big park with a playground, a wide open area with a few small „forests“ and a pond.

1.14     Outdoor-Area

There is no separate outdoor play area. Sunny preschool is within walking distance to the Rungenberghalde facility and the popular excursion destination "Lohmühlenpark am Lohmühlental" with a children's playground. These places are part of our everyday life and are visited regularly. The children should, on the one hand, learn how to move in public traffic and, on the other hand, get as many (social) contacts as possible in the local area. In 2006, the Sunny preschool gGmbH took on a       so-called sponsorship for the playground. In this way, the children learn to take responsibility for part of the community property.

As "godparents" it is our job to report to the city of Gelsenkirchen if we find any damage or rubbish on the playground. Small impurities are cleaned up by the children themselves. By having to look after the playground ourselves we learn about taking responsibility for our own environment.

We often use the Lohmühlenpark, Berger See and the Halde for excursions. The children get to know the different animals and plants with the help of various experiments and games. We also take part in so-called nature groups and learn a lot about nature together with "Ralf" who is a certified nature educator.

1.15     Financing

The facility is financed by funding from KiBiz NRW and a self-generated contribution.
